The course builds the skills required for lectures, tutorials, reading research and written assignments in English.
Listening skills include:
- predicting what comes next;
- understanding spoken spellings and definitions;
- following instructions;
- identifying names;

Speaking skills include:
- asking about meaning and pronunciation;
- checking sounds in a dictionary;
- giving personal information;
- expressing likes and dislikes;

Reading skills include:
- predicting content from illustrations, subheadings and topic sentences;

- locating information;
- and transferring information.
Writing skills include:
- ordering information;
- referring;
- and describing habits and routines, location and places.
The Skills in English Course prepares students for entry into English-medium study. It is also ideal for students who wish to improve their scores in skill-based examinations for university entry requirements, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Rather than focusing on exam preparation, The Skills in English Course teaches the necessary skills as part of a systematic programme of language development.
