SUN SHINES ON INDEPENDENT PUBLISHER

Sunshine authors and award

Garnet Education is delighted and extremely proud to announce that its publication Sunshine has won, against stiff competition, the prestigious ‘Best Entry for Children’ award at this year’s English Language Book Awards hosted at Buckingham Palace by the English-Speaking Union.

The award was presented in person by HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, to Garnet staff and the authors of Sunshine at a Buckingham Palace ceremony on Wednesday this week. The authors, who are based in Argentina, flew over specially for the ceremony and were very excited and honoured to receive the award and be given the opportunity to visit the Palace and meet the Prince.

Sunshine, a three-level course designed to teach English to non-native pre-school children, features a host of colourful and charming characters drawn by talented Garnet Education illustrator Doug Nash and written by Marta Graciela García Lorea and Elida Beatriz Messina.

The Sunshine series, which impressed the panel of highly respected judges, was described by them as “having well executed materials with an appropriate emphasis on both aural and visual learning for pre-literate children. It was engaging, visually stimulating and the whole course immediately grabbed attention with its colour, characters and recycling of language in fun and realistic ways for young learners.”

This is the second ESU award for Garnet, who also won the 2009 Award for their English for Specific Academic Purposes series, which the judges described as “a tribute to Garnet’s vision and a worthy winner …”.

The English-Speaking Union (ESU) is an international educational charity founded in 1918. In 1957 it received a Royal Charter, with Queen Elizabeth II as the Royal Patron and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, as President. The ESU aims to “bring together and empower people of different languages and cultures”. The awards are highly contested in the field of English language publishing.

Garnet Education, an independent UK publisher based in Reading, Berkshire, has long enjoyed a global reputation for quality and innovation in this field. Garnet produces custom-made course materials for overseas schools following national curricula, and also publishes material for pre-school through to post-graduate and professional English for institutions around the globe.
