All learners use coping strategies to navigate the complexities of their university studies. For international students, these complexities can be especially challenging. Despite this, most international students ultimately attain their required qualifications and many of them develop effective coping strategies in the process. This paper reports on a research project that identified coping strategies used by PGT international students at a UK university. The project was a practice-based exploration that constructed data from 18 qualitative interviews and a grounded theory analysis that was based in EAP practice. This paper presents the findings and discusses them in relation to a multi-disciplinary literature. To conclude, this paper poses questions for practitioners who may want to consider coping as part of a pedagogical approach in EAP.
