Lecturer training for English-medium instruction: What and how?

Katrien L. B. Deroey

Abstract

The boom in English Medium Instruction (EMI) may lead EAP practitioners to be tasked with developing and delivering training or support to EMI lecturers. Based on published European initiatives, this paper reviews what major components such initiatives can contain and how they can be delivered. Overall, it was found that programmes went beyond language training to also include pedagogical and (intercultural) communication strategies. The need to include pedagogical training was stressed in most reports. The initiatives included teaching practice with feedback and self-reflection, courses, consultations, online platforms and peer networks. Participants are generally reported to greatly value the use of mini-lectures as opportunities for expert and peer feedback, self-reflection and observation. The paper concludes with pedagogical and organizational implications from the survey regarding the provision of EMI lecturer training.
